Starbucks cup sizes: more than just ounces

A bigger cup does not tell the whole story. If you track your usual Starbucks order, the useful comparison is the same drink in two sizes—with the milk, syrup, and espresso recipe kept visible.

What the names mean

Short is 8 US fluid ounces, Tall is 12, and Grande is 16. Venti is 20 fluid ounces for hot drinks and 24 for iced drinks. Trenta is 30 fluid ounces and is available for selected cold beverages, including Cold Brew. These are cup capacities, not a promise that every ounce is milk or coffee. Ice and foam occupy space too.

Not every drink is available in every size. Our calculator only offers the sizes listed for that drink in the US menu snapshot. Frappuccino beverages, for example, have Tall, Grande, and Venti options; a Short Frappuccino is not part of this menu.

Why calories and caffeine do not scale together

A Tall Caffè Latte has one standard espresso shot; Grande has two. A hot Venti Latte still uses two, while the iced Venti version uses three. Increasing the cup size can therefore increase milk and calories without the same increase in caffeine.

That is why this calculator stores a separate nutrition record for each size. It does not multiply every value by the ratio of cup capacities. You can compare actual default recipes on the drink detail pages.

Hot and iced are separate recipes

An Iced Caffè Latte is not simply a hot latte with a few ice cubes added. The default nutrition is different. Compare the hot and iced versions directly, rather than assuming the same cup name means the same ingredients or calories.

Make one change at a time

Choose the drink and size first. Then adjust milk or syrup so you can see what caused the change. Changing size in this calculator restores that size’s default recipe; this keeps the starting point clear.
