Two orders with the same drink name can have different nutrition. Milk and syrup are useful places to start because they are easy to describe when ordering—and easy to compare before you get to the café.
A swap should replace the original ingredient
If you change a latte from 2% milk to nonfat milk, the original milk should not remain in the total. Our calculation starts with the default menu nutrition, subtracts the modelled original milk portion, then adds the same modelled volume of the new milk.
The volume is an assumption. A 16-ounce cup is not 16 ounces of milk: espresso, ice, foam, and other ingredients take space. We show the estimated milk amount below the customization controls so that you can see what the calculation assumes.
Compare more than calories
Milk alternatives do not all have the same profile. A lower-calorie choice can also have less protein. Some plant-based milks contain added sugar. The comparison model uses published Horizon dairy and Oatly Barista labels as ingredient proxies; it does not verify which supplier or formulation a specific café uses.
The original Starbucks nutrition stays unchanged until you edit the recipe. Manufacturer proxy differences should not overwrite an official default label.
Less syrup is different from less total sugar
Removing a syrup pump reduces the modelled syrup contribution. It does not remove the milk’s naturally occurring sugar or sugar elsewhere in the recipe. A drink ordered with no syrup is not necessarily sugar-free.
For full pumps, our syrup comparison uses a 7.5 ml portion and a Torani vanilla label proxy: about 20 calories and 5 grams of sugar. Frappuccino uses a half-pump model. Syrup flavor, pumps, and dispensers can vary, so these are estimates rather than official Starbucks ingredient measurements.

A Caramel Macchiato also contains caramel drizzle; reducing vanilla syrup does not remove it. A Frappuccino includes a blending base as well as flavored syrup. Our first version holds sauces, drizzle, powders, and the blending base at their standard amounts.
Use the calculator to compare a small change, and read the assumptions before treating the result as a precise tracking label. The ingredient source links below the calculator explain the proxy values.
